The group raised €4,000 to benefit Kriibs Krank Kanner, an organisation that supports families and children affected by cancer. The group runs several financial, psychological and practical support programmes.

Some 170 players and spectators braved the weekend heatwave to participate in the event, which took place at the Rugby Club of Luxembourg’s Cessange site. Indeed, Kick Cancer Into Touch was spun out of the RCL by members whose lives had been touched by cancer.

Organiser Joe Lister told Delano he was pleased to see “everybody joining in the spirit of the day and helping out from volunteering, to cleaning up, to keeping up positive spirits through the games and tournament.”

The competition itself featured 11 touch rugby teams with players mixed by gender and experience level, and ranged in age from six to 60.

Twelve-year old Liam Carroll took home the “player of the tournament” award, “with some great play and above all great attitude during the event,” Lister noted. He added a “special note for the Golden Ladies, a woman’s only team that won the plate competition and maybe also some hearts on the day.”

First place overall went to the KCIT team, an impromptu group of touch players including some who are new to the sport.

The runner-up was the SHRM Better Than You team.

The nine other teams were the Clearstream Exiles, Eclectics, The Golden Ladies, HSBC, Jason Muller, KPMG, The Pink Ladies, RBS Blue Balls, and Rugby Coaches and Sons.

Lister also expressed thanks to the event’s sponsors, which are listed on the KCIT website.
