“Roadways will be made difficult due to snowfall,” Luxembourg’s meteorology service has warned.

On Friday morning the agency forecasted a moderate snow storm until 4 p.m., with wind-gusts of up to 50 kilometres per hour, and then a risk of heavy snowfalls continuing until 9 p.m. A total of approximately 10 cm is expected to accumulate.

As of 8 a.m. Friday morning, there were “no problems” on the CFL network, a spokesman for Luxembourg’s national railway told Delano.

Snow is not the CFL’s main challenge, he explained. “Trains can run without any problems on their tracks through quite serious amounts snow.” The most common causes of delays are “blocked cars at railroad crossings. Also trees breaking due to the weight of the snow and falling onto our tracks will cause the train traffic to be interrupted.”

Extended periods of freezing rain--not currently forecasted by the weather service--can allow ice to build up and damage overhead contact lines, he added.

In recent winters, “we always were able to offer excellent service through these adverse weather conditions,” the spokesman reported.

However, across eastern France “train speeds are likely to be limited and traffic disturbed” on Friday, French national railway SNCF said.

On Thursday evening French authorities in Metz announced that all commercial road traffic was suspended in Moselle department starting at midnight on Friday through midnight on Saturday.

Luxembourg’s weather service has forecast a dry and partly sunny Saturday, with lighter levels of snow returning Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
