The education minister, Claude Meisch (DP), has reportedly said that wearing masks will not be required and that the CovidCheck system will not be automatically deployed in Luxembourg state schools when the academic year starts on 15 September.

During a meeting with union representatives, Meisch stated that CovidCheck could possibly be used when there are one or more covid cases in the same class, according to RTL. However, no final decision has been taken, the broadcaster on Tuesday.

Meisch reportedly was against systematic testing of students, which has been implemented in Saarland, because it risks putting disadvantaged students at a further disadvantage, per RTL.

The exact rules that will apply in Luxembourg schools are likely to be approved by the government during Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.

The prime minister, Xavier Bettel (DP), and health minister, Paulette Lenert (LSAP), are expected to outline the measures during a press conference scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 2pm.
