Luxembourg reduced its consumption of natural gas by 33.5% in October 2023 when compared to the 2017-2022 reference period, the country’s energy ministry said on 6 November.

The autumnal equinox was on 23 September and the weather is getting colder. Luxembourg, however, continues to perform well on its gas consumption reduction goals.

After a and , the grand duchy reduced its consumption of natural gas by 33.5% in October, when compared to the 2017-2022 reference period.

This decrease in gas consumption goes beyond the voluntary gas demand reduction target of 15% established by the European Union last year after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Less demand for gas, as well as filling EU gas storage facilities ahead of winter, aim to guarantee the security of the EU’s energy supply.

The European Commission announced in mid-August that the EU had met its goal of to 90%, two and a half months ahead of its 1 November deadline. Figures from Gas Infrastructure Europe’s, last updated on 4 November, show that the EU’s gas storage facilities are estimated to be 99.55% full (there are 1134.6435 Twh of gas in storage).
