Over the second week of January, the omicron variant made up 96.5% of all samples analysed by the grand duchy’s national laboratory (LNS). The most frequent lineage was BA.1.

The LNS analysed 701 samples from Luxembourg residents between 10 and 16 January, 6% of all cases identified that week, and confirmed that omicron remained the dominant strain of the virus.

The highly virulent virus has taken over the country. More virulent than the delta variant, omicron at the start of the new year caused havoc in schools where nearly 15% or in quarantine. This week, due to a covid-induced staff shortage.

The growing incidence of the omicron variant in Luxembourg has heavily contributed to the chances of being . On 24 January, 6,624 reinfections had been registered. To better understand the measures to take, a change in the monitoring and reporting of cases is planned. Hospitalisation and death rates remain stable despite the soaring numbers. 

Between 17 and 23 January, 15,293 people tested positive for covid-19 in Luxembourg, according to a government press release from 26 January.
