Eurostat figures released on 24 January on the occasion of International Day of Education show that fewer people did an online course or used online learning material in 2022 than in 2021. There was a decrease of nearly 6% in Luxembourg.

In the first quarter of 2022, 25.5% of people in the European Union did an online course-- a planned series of learning activities in a certain subject or topic offered entirely or partly online--that resulted in a qualification or certificate of attendance or used online educational material. This is down from 27.5% in 2021.

The number of people who did an online course or used online learning material also decreased in Luxembourg, from 42.8% in 2021 in to 37.1% in 2022.

Amongst all EU countries, people in Finland were the most likely to have done an online course (50.3%) in 2022, followed by people in Spain (41.5%) and Sweden (40.0%). Luxembourg had the sixth-highest number of people who did an online course or online learning in 2022.

Online courses or online educational material were the least common in Romania (7.8%), Bulgaria (11.2%) and Poland (15.0%).

The popularity of online courses increased during the pandemic, noted Eurostat, but declined with the easing of restrictions linked to covid-19.
