Deputy prime minister and health minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP) said on Wednesday evening that she is “ready” to succeed Xavier Bettel (DP) as next prime minister if the results of the upcoming legislative elections call for it.

is open to going one step further. After indicating at the LSAP’s New Year’s reception at the end of January that she is ready to lead the campaign for the autumn legislative elections, the deputy prime minister and minister of health said she is “ready” to take on her responsibilities--in other words, to assume the role of prime minister, after the elections.

“I took the time to reflect, to know if I had the necessary strength,” she told RTL. Among her red lines, she said she was particularly vigilant about the creeping privatisation of health care. On the subject of the reduction of the working week, she wanted a debate based on the report that the minister of labour,  (LSAP), is due to publish shortly. “It is a very complex issue, we need to see the good and bad aspects before taking a decision.”

Luxembourg’s favourite politician, ahead of foreign minister Jean Asselborn (LSAP), acknowledged that her main competitor, (CSV), “is an interesting personality,” who would bring “motivation” and that “he had had months to prepare” for this deadline. However, she wondered why the CSV had not been able to bring out another personality.
