The Philharmonie Luxembourg celebrates the piano Philharmonie

They say the piano, with its 88 keys, is an orchestra in itself. Throughout the month of March at the Philharmonie, you’ll see that this instrument may also hold the key to your heart…

Our journey commences pianissimo on 05.03. with Hélène Grimaud. With the touch of her fingertips, the French performer reinterprets and lifts the veil on intimate classics. Beethoven, for example, dedicated his Piano Sonata No. 30 to the daughter of his lifelong friend Antonie Brentano. Brahms saw his Intermezzi as «the lullaby of his suffering», and Bach's Chaconne makes a heart-rending elegy.

In Spain, on the other hand, there's no such thing as melancholy! A secret garden, the heavy and fragrant heat of a summer night... are you dreaming of it too? Composer Manuel de Falla sure did. In Noches en los jardines de Espana, he immortalises the nocturnal magic of his beloved Andalusia. Supported by Gustavo Gimeno and his orchestra, Andalusian pianist Javier Perianes will make you dance to Falla’s sensual      melodies on 10.03.

Sergei Rachmaninov is just as enchanting, and now more than ever in this double jubilee year: 2023 marks both the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninov’s birth and the 80th anniversary of the death of "last great      Romantic". To mark this occasion, great performers will pay tribute to the composer’s work.  On 13.03., Yuja Wang will tackle Rachmaninov's favourite, the formidable Piano Concerto No. 3, while Sergei Babayan and Daniil Trifonov will present the exhilarating Suite for Two Pianos.

On 26 March, you will be treated to another powerful duo in the Grand Auditorium! Although piano and organ often battle for the title of 'king of instruments', here they will unite their differences in a series of original arrangements ranging from Bach's pious cantatas to Gershwin's American flâneries. Duel or dialogue? Clash of the titans or tender embrace between two instrument parents? Find out for yourself…

With their project «Les Mots d’Amour» (the words of love), singer Angélique Kidjo and pianist Alexandre Tharaud form a tight-knit pair, presenting an exciting melting pot of classical and pop music music at the Philharmonie on 19.03. It will be the second highlight of an already “romantic” weekend with Rudolf Buchbinder performing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto the day before.

From baroque to pop, solo or in concerto, the piano shows itself in all its facettes  at the Philharmonie this month. So, what are you waiting for? Come discover our selected highlights and let us journey on towards World Piano Day together, taking place –you guessed it– on 29.03., the 88th day of the year…
