Luxembourg added another 10,667 residents last year, bringing its total population to 645,397, national statistics office Statec said on Monday.

More than 25,300 people moved to the grand duchy last year, Statec said, with just under 16,000 people moving away. Together with 6,690 babies being born and 4,489 people dying, this leaves a net increase of 10,667 people added to Luxembourg’s population.

The number of births was up 2.1% compared to the year before, when 6,549 babies were born. The number of deaths decreased compared to the year the covid-19 pandemic broke out and when 4,609 people died.

Of the people living in the country, 47.1% are non-nationals, with Portuguese making up the largest single group of foreigners (14.5% of the population), followed by France (7.6%) and Italy 3.7%. Non-EU nationals make up 6.1% of the population.

The country is also hemorrhaging Luxembourgers. Around 1,500 Luxembourg nationals moved back to the grand duchy last year, but more than 3,000 left. Statec offers no further information on the data but it could indicate the growing number of Luxembourgers who move across the border for cheaper real estate, joining the roughly 200,000 cross-border workers who commute into the country every day.

The number of additional Luxembourgers doesn’t include people who gained citizenship, with 6,801 people getting a Luxembourg passport last year.

Elsewhere, there are slightly more men in Luxembourg than women, at 325,064 compared to 320,333. And people in Luxembourg celebrated 1,945 weddings in 2021, while 1,400 marriages were divorced.
