With the arrival of the tramway at Findel airport only a matter of days away, Luxtram on Wednesday announced the launch of preparatory work for the extension of the line to Kirchberg, on Boulevard Konrad-Adenauer. Work will start this week, with the new extension between the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte Bridge and the European School scheduled to enter service in September 2027.

Going to the airport by tram will soon no longer be just a dream. From 2 March, the tramway will serve Findel with two new stations: Héienhaff P+R and Findel-Luxembourg Airport. But that’s not all. This week, Luxtram is also launching preparations for the construction work to extend line 1 along a new section (K2A) from the Pfaffenthal/Kirchberg interchange to the European School, to be completed in several phases.

Before construction of the line can begin, the space will have to be created for it to pass through. To start, Luxtram will be carrying out preparatory work on the site between Avenue Kennedy and Rue Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi. The work, which will kick off this week, will involve pruning and removing 92 trees and replanting 49.

“The worksite facilities will then be set up, and Luxtram will also proceed with the temporary redevelopment and modification of the road network and the removal of equipment and street furniture. All of this preparatory work is subject to prior authorisation from the state and City of Luxembourg,” says Luxtram. It also plans to undertake work to divert and renew underground networks, in particular those located under the future tramway platform, so that they can remain accessible for maintenance or repairs, without having to interrupt tramway operations.

The work will then continue on Boulevard Konrad Adenauer and involve major changes to the public space, with an approach that Luxtram defines as sustainable and favourable to soft mobility. “The green tramway platform, which will be placed centrally on Boulevard Konrad-Adenauer with a double line of trees, will enrich the plant heritage and thus contribute to a better quality of life for everyone. With the opening of the new section, the existing 10,000m2 of green space will increase by 50%, and the number of trees in the 2.3km wooded avenue will rise to 400, including 49 temporarily transplanted trees and 150 new trees,” explains Luxtram.

The new extension will come into service at the start of the 2027 school year. As a reminder, the cost of this extension was estimated at €106m. At the end of a new phase of works--the date of which has not yet been set--the tramway will also link the future Kubebierg district to Luxexpo.
