One year after the floods that devastated swathes of the country, the minister for the environment, Joëlle Welfring (dei Gréng), has presented the repair, protection and prevention measures that will enable the country to better cope with future floods.

The floods in July 2021 left their mark on Luxembourg and the government has, over the past year, not only taken several measures have been initiated to improve flood prevention and protection, but also to inform the general public. For example, the water management administration (AGE) has provided information on the tools available to the public, such as the draft flood risk management plan, maps of flood zones and flood risk areas and flash flood danger maps.

A total of 51 public information meetings, flood partnerships, inter-administration and international meetings have taken place and 27 flood risk management concepts (pluvial and fluvial) and flood control projects have been initiated since last July. In addition, 32 individual protection projects have been subsidised. Finally, Welfring indicated that the estimated costs of the planned river repair measures will amount to €10.1m.

The minister also emphasised the prevention work, which consists of mapping the country and drawing up maps of flood zones in order to simulate scenarios and help anticipate the measures to be taken and avoid the worst.

Finally, the information made available in the event of flooding has been improved and above all made more visible to the population.
