Raising a teenager in Luxembourg costs up to €700 a month, statistics office Statec said on Wednesday, with most of that going to food.

Statec looked at two different profiles, a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl for their analysis. For the younger teenager, the budget is estimated at €593 per month, while for the older one, the cost is at €698, with the rise mostly due to higher transport costs.

Shared household costs, such as rent or utilities, aren’t included in the list.

“With this minimum budget, they can assume their diverse roles in contemporary society, whether they frequent the Luxembourg school system, participate in social life, meet their friends, or to move about,” said Statec.

With the data for the basket of goods on which the analysis is based collected between June and September last year, the numbers also don’t take into account the rapid price increases experienced because of the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and global supply chain disruptions.

Adding a 5.6% inflation rate, the costs to raise a teenager rise to €626 for the boy and €737 for the girl. This includes price increases for food but also clothes and other goods and services included in the basket of goods.

For a family of four--two parents and two teenage children--Statec estimates that a budget of around €4,700 a month is needed, including rent. This so-called reference budget covers basic needs.
