Around 125 British citizens have failed to apply for a residency permit in the grand duchy following Brexit, leading to another extension of the deadline. British citizens living in Luxembourg now have until 30 June 2023 to send in their request.

All UK nationals who arrived in Luxembourg before 1 January 2021 because of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU must apply to update their status or risk losing their right to live and work in the country as well as access to social benefits if they fail to register with authorities. The ministry of foreign affairs confirms that around 125 British residents and their family members concerned by this had not yet applied, though “there are also people who in the meantime no longer live in Luxembourg, so the number of people who are concerned is a little lower,” a spokesperson told Delano. , around 100 citizens hadn’t completed the administrative procedure yet.

The number of UK nationals seeking Luxembourg citizenship jumped in the wake of Brexit. While in 2015, before the referendum, 75 people gained citizenship, this number nearly doubled the following year. Between 2016 and 2020, a total of 1,669 UK nationals obtained a Luxembourg passport.

So far, the government has reached out to latecomers three times via a posted letter, though whether they’ll be contacted again remains to be seen.
