Are you passionate about chivalry and castle life? Curious to discover the customs and traditions of medieval times? Then don’t miss the chance to explore Vianden Castle from 29 July to 6 August during the 21st edition of the Medieval Festival in the Ardennes town.
Over these nine days, from 11am to 7pm, more than a hundred participants will be strolling around the castle to recreate the atmosphere of a bygone era. On the programme: knight encampments, fire-eating shows, knight tournaments, jugglers, craftsmen, calligraphers and falconers will entertain visitors, all in an atmosphere punctuated by medieval melodies. For music lovers, on Sunday 6 August the group Gnomus will be performing from 6pm to 7pm in the main village hall.
It’s also a chance to discover--or rediscover--one of the most beautiful castles in the world. In 2019, CNN published its selection of the 21 most beautiful castles in the world, which included Vianden.
This year, Vianden is back in the ranking--in twelfth place--just behind Edinburgh Castle. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman castel and a Carolingian refuge, the monument has been restored since 1977 in keeping with historic forms. It’s one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic eras in Europe.
