The fireworks display that would traditionally accompany the end of the fun fair has been cancelled, the capital’s municipality shared on 6 September.

The Schueberfouer ends on 7 September, a week ahead of the start of the school year. Usually, activities on the last day are half-priced until 8pm, when the closing ceremony starts.

After a cancellation in 2021 and a restricted edition in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fair was able to return with a full programme and without restrictions.  But this year too, the fair will again not be able to conduct business as usual.

Indeed, the lack of rain combined with extreme heatwaves during the summer--which was according to the national weather service--means that the fireworks represent a hazard.

“Following the negative advice of the Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Service (CGDIS), the fireworks planned for Wednesday 7 September 2022 at 10 p.m. as part of the closing ceremony of the Schueberfouer are cancelled due to the increased risk of fire due to the prolonged drought,” the city of Luxembourg stated in a press release.

The drought in Luxembourg this summer has caused several disruptions, namely for. The government has also called for citizens to be mindful in their drinking water consumption as water levels are lower than usual.
