The ‘Schueb’ is back in full-swing Léa Giordano

The biggest fair of the Greater Region returns on 19 August after two years of restrictions, with new additions to the offer.

Over one million visitors are expected to go to the fair until 7 September. After a cancellation in 2020 and a reviewed, sparser version in 2021, the Schueberfouer makes a comeback.

Among the changes undertaken this year are the opening hours. The activities at the fair will run from 12pm to 1am every day, meaning that 2am closures on weekend nights are a thing of the past. Restaurants and food stalls will, however, be able to open at 11am, rather than 12pm. The alderman for fairs and markets, Patrick Goldschmidt, confirms that this decision was taken in accordance with the exhibitors.

Among the 223 stalls and activities at the fair, French fairground vendors and traders make up 35.9% of all participants, followed by Luxembourgers (30%) and Germans (21.1%).

The layout of the fairgrounds--spread over 4.44ha--will resemble the 2019 edition, the city of Luxembourg shared.

New rides and old

The fair will welcome a plethora of new rides for its 2022 edition, such as the Daemonium, a 36m-long ghost train, which also happens to be the largest mobile haunted ride in the world. Other rides with names such as “Parkour”, “Pirate”, “Aquavelis” or “Gravity” are also bound to attract thrill seekers.

Other activities and stalls such as “Wild Mouse” or “Hexentanz” will also make their return.

In total, there will be 22 rides and activities for children, 27 thrill rides for teens and adults, as well as 82 food stalls or restaurants. Shooting stands and gaming arcades are also part of the offer.

Prices, however, should remain similar to those paid in 2019, despite the ongoing energy crisis which impacts the event, the alderman shared. The city of Luxembourg has provided a lot of support so as to not impact the visitors and vendors too much after two strained years.

On 24 August, families will pay less on joy rides for children. On the last day of the Schueberfouer, all stands and activities will be half-priced until 8pm. As tradition wants it, a firework show will take place to signify the end of the fair.

Keeping the environment and locals in mind

With 82 food stands, the Schueberfouer generates a lot of waste. Which is why, as the VdL states in a press release, it has encouraged vendors to use reusable cutlery and plates, as well as provided recycling bins. Cleaners will also look after the site in the early morning, to keep the fair grounds clean.

To avoid complaints from disgruntled locals, the city has also closed off the Schuman parking, and asks visitors to use any parking along the tramline instead. Paid parking will be available in Limpertsberg, Pfaffenthal and Rollingergrund.
