From buildings and infrastructure to green spaces and even entire districts: Luxembourg is evolving thanks to Schroeder & Associés, an innovative engineering consultancy.

A tour of Luxembourg reveals a mosaic of buildings and infrastructures, a harmonious blend of styles and functions. Here, a water tower; there, a school campus; further afield, a tram crossing the capital, a park welcoming walkers or even a velodrome under construction – each structure testifying to thoughtful, forward-thinking engineering. You’re bound to be familiar with all these places in your daily life. But what you may not know is that they are the result of the multidisciplinary expertise of Schroeder & Associés, an engineering consultancy committed to sustainability.

Reinventing Luxembourg: expertise at the service of innovation

For more than 60 years, Schroeder & Associés has played a key role in the development of Luxembourg, actively contributing to its growth. “Our team of nearly 500 multidisciplinary employees is a true ‘Swiss army knife’, where each person brings his or her own expertise to bear on the complex and varied needs of our clients,” explains Thierry Flies, Managing Director. The engineering consultancy is a strategic partner for ministries, local authorities and private clients, supporting them from the design stage to the completion of their projects.

“Engineering the Future Together”

The strength of Schroeder & Associés lies in close collaboration and collective commitment. Engineers, acousticians and technicians, architects, archaeologists and many other experts combine their talents every day to shape Luxembourg. Thanks to this synergy, the company is able to meet the most ambitious technical challenges. Its 2030 strategy is based on three fundamental pillars: integrated services, excellence and sustainability. A management team of 15 partners, drawn from within the company, ensures a shared vision and long-term commitment. The motto “Engineering the Future Together” reflects this spirit of unity and collaboration.

Innovation as the driving force

Beyond its technical expertise, innovation is a core value that guides every project. It’s more than just a slogan: it drives Schroeder & Associés to exceed expectations and turn every challenge into an opportunity.

“Innovation is at the heart of our DNA. It is essential if we are to offer our clients ever more effective, sustainable and appropriate solutions. We incorporate the latest technological advances and anticipate tomorrow’s challenges to build a safer, more sustainable future,” says Thierry Flies.

Through our projects we try to have a real impact on the future of Luxembourg and even the planet.

Sustainability at the heart of projects in the south

Sustainability is another key priority for Schroeder & Associés, working to build a responsible future for Luxembourg. Among these projects, the sustainable “Rout Lëns” district in Esch-sur-Alzette – designed and built in collaboration with a group of national and international experts – illustrates this commitment. This former industrial site will be transformed into a green living space with a 6,000 m² urban farm and green roofs. The district will be heated and cooled by geothermal energy, reducing its carbon footprint.

Nearby, the “Symbiosis” project on the “Metzeschmelz” site, straddling Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange, aims for innovative, circular resource management. Rainwater and grey water will be recovered for several cycles of use, while waste will be used to produce biomass or fertilisers for local agriculture. Even the old industrial buildings will be given a second life: the crushed concrete will be recycled on site.

Initiatives in the north and east

In the north of the country, the “Wunne mat der Woolz” project in Wiltz promises a lively riverside district, integrating housing, school campuses and meeting places. Designed according to a circular logic, this district will favour renewable energies, soft mobility and energy neutrality. Brownfield sites will be rehabilitated to reconnect the two banks of the valley, offering parks and green spaces.

Further east, the day care centre at Roodt-sur-Syre is an innovative pilot project, designed in harmony with real needs and local resources, with a focus on healthy, sustainable construction. A true trailblazer, it has the potential to become a benchmark, inspiring other initiatives and demonstrating that it is possible to build differently while ensuring long-term profitability. Its sustainable and circular features include the use of clay blocks from local excavations, wood from communal or state-owned forests or recycled wood, a regional value chain for materials and their processing, mechanical fixings that allow dismantling at the end of the cycle, as well as shaded façades and carefully selected vegetation. Putting people at the heart of its approach, this participatory project is built around the needs of users, with a vision for children and the future.

A showcase for sustainability and innovation in Kockelscheuer

A symbol of Schroeder & Associés’ expertise is their head office in Kockelscheuer finished in 2020. This DGNB Gold-certified building was built entirely by local companies and embodies the values of sustainability, well-being at work and innovation. Its façade, made from bio-sourced materials and partially planted with vegetation, facilitates future deconstruction, illustrating an eco-design approach.

Inspired by the “Building in layers” philosophy, the reinforced concrete load-bearing structure rests on slabs supported by columns, central cores, stairwells and load-bearing walls that are independent of the external envelope. The interior plasterboard partitions are modular and can be dismantled without major intervention, thanks to the use of screws rather than glue. The materials have been carefully selected to be reusable at the end of their life. The headquarters complies with “Nearly Zero Energy Building” passive house standards. Heating is provided by pellet-fired boilers and photovoltaic panels installed on the roof. The building’s insulation has also been optimised to maximise its energy efficiency.

“Our values include engineering, innovation and sustainability. Through our projects we try to have a real impact on the future of Luxembourg and even the planet,” explains Martine Schummer, engineer-administrator.

At Schroeder & Associés, excellence, innovation and sustainability are more than just words – they are commitments that the whole team lives every day to shape a better future, together.
