In the build-up to Valentines, Foodzilla looks at some of the more unique dining venues you could pick if you are feeling bold and want to impress your date.

Not afraid of getting high?

A bird's eye view of the Petrusse valley and the capital always has its effect...  So head for the Mu restaurant of the Sofitel Grand-Ducal, with its crazy panorama and its superb local meats from Kirsch, the establishment's new favourite. Then visit the adjoining Observatory for an Espresso Martini or two, before spending a crazy night in a room on the lower floors of the hotel. Or take the train home, the station is really not far away... (Those suffering from vertigo should probably not go though.)

Mu/L'Observatoire @ Sofitel Grand-Ducal: 40, boulevard d'Avranches, Luxembourg (Station), T. 24 87 71

Not afraid of smelly cheese?

The cheese board at the Postkutsch restaurant in Esch-sur-Alzette is probably one of the most incredible you will come across not only in Luxembourg, but also far beyond the borders... It’s a fantastic selection of scent bombs for cheese aficionados. But best check with your date beforehand to be sure to be on the same olfactory wavelength at the end of the meal.

Restaurant Postkutsch: 8, rue Xavier Brasseur, Esch-sur-Alzette, T. 54 51 69

Not afraid of smelly fingers?

To hell with good manners on a first date! Garlic scampi is life, it's sexy. You'll get your fingers and your napkin full of it, you'll look unappealing when you eat it and you'll smell like a fisherman in the port of Porto when you leave Bacano's, but who cares? For those who love thrills, this is a real no-strings-attached plan.

Isabel Bacano's: 372B, route de Thionville, Hesperange, T. 26 44 15 85

Not afraid of spending all your luncheon vouchers at once?

Of course, a Michelin-starred dinner is a sure thing for a date, but it might seem a bit too much for a first encounter... If you feel like pulling out the big guns to impress your date, go and slap some gold leaves on a big Wagyu duo at Terra in Kirchberg! It’s juicy, baby!

Terra Steakhouse: 15, rue Edward Steichen, Luxembourg (Kirchberg), T. 28 80 23 63

Not afraid to follow your gut?

Once again, it's best to be sure you’re on the same page if choose the Lion d'Or in Strassen for a first date, because you won't be dining on nouvelle cuisine or tiny portions of spottted with foam.  This is a place to gorge on all sorts of pork and tripe. In fact, for Valentine's Day, there is a “naughty” pie with wild skrei and leek and black garlic. Boom!

Lion d'Or: 201, route d'Arlon, Strassen, T. 26 33 44 04

Not afraid to set yourself on fire (literally)?

At the Aal Schoul restaurant in Steinfort, you don't need to say much when you hear about "The Tomahawk, an exceptional piece of meat weighing 1.35kg served for two people, flambéed and cut up in the dining room”-- meaning, in front of your astonished eyes. If you are prone to compulsive sneezing, avoid the tequila shot just before... Being on fire is all good and well, so long as it’s a figure of speech! In any case, to heat up the atmosphere, we couldn't find a better place.

Aal Schoul: 33A, Grand-Rue, Hobscheid, T. 28 85 09
