Sompo has secured regulatory approval to underwrite primary insurance in Belgium and the Netherlands, further strengthening its presence in Continental Europe.

Sompo, a global provider of commercial and consumer property, casualty and specialty insurance and reinsurance, has received regulatory approval to write primary insurance locally in Belgium and the Netherlands. The approval expands its operations in continental Europe.

The company’s European legal entity, Sompo International Insurance Europe, is based in Luxembourg and regulated by the Supervisory Authority for the Insurance Sector (CAA). The approval, on Thursday 27 March 2025, strengthens Sompo’s commercial property and casualty insurance capabilities in the region. The insurer already operates in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland.

Ralph Brand, president of continental Europe insurance at Sompo, stated that the company had significantly expanded its presence in the region in recent years. He described the licences in Belgium and the Netherlands as an important milestone for the business. He noted that clients were increasingly seeking insurance partners with both local presence and global expertise to navigate complex risks. Brand added that Sompo empowered its local teams to collaborate with clients and brokers to develop flexible insurance solutions.

A Sompo representative told Paperjam, “The company has not yet set up a Luxembourgish-based underwriting function targeting this specific market. Notwithstanding, SIIE may offer insurance solutions in relation to specific risks located in Luxembourg and serve clients based there through its underwriting teams based in the other European Branches, operating on freedom of services basis.”
