No sooner has St Nicholas’s Day passed than it’s time for Christmas and the gifts it brings. Children and teenagers can be spoiled at the end of the year and in Luxembourg shops, some items are in particularly high demand. Take a guided tour.

Four floors and hundreds of items on the shelves: Luxembourg’s largest toy shop is full of gift ideas for the very young and the very old. At Domino, “the demand is still for quality educational toys. They are often made of wood for the little ones and have an educational value for the older ones,” says Christiane Schmit, manager of the store based in the upper city.

The company also has a wide range of board games, which have been very popular since the lockdowns. “The has risen sharply, and this is reflected in the games. Nowadays, board games costing €40 or more are a niche market that attracts fewer customers. And personally, I would rather recommend two games at €20 than one at €40,” the shopkeeper summarises.

Licensed products are still a safe bet if you are short of gift ideas. For the little ones, we can mention products stamped with the Paw Patrol logo, while for the older children, Pokémon remains popular.

Tonies are the absolute hit of the moment.

Books to listen to and read

“The Tonies are the absolute success of the moment,” says Paul Ernster, administrative and financial director of the family-owned company. This brand offers a Toniebox that plays audio books thanks to figurines--the Tonies--that are placed on the box. Owned by a Luxembourg structure, the connected object also allows children’s relatives to broadcast personalised content.

The chain of ten bookshops has also seen an increase in sales of children's games and board games. In books, the current bestseller for young readers is Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Mangas and video games are popular

At Le Réservoir, boss Christophe Ayroles presents the top three best-selling products at the moment: the One Piece Luffy in Kimono POP figurine, the video game Need for Speed Unbound on PS5 and volume 10 of the Spy X Family manga.

Finally, teenagers and pre-teens are also fond of electronic devices. At Hifi International, “consoles and video games are very much in demand for the youngest, as are instant cameras such as Instax,” adds Thibaut Puls, digital marketing manager.
