A Eurobarometer survey on public opinion throughout the European Union, conducted in early 2024, highlighted Luxembourg’s positive economic sentiment and European engagement. The survey findings shed light on various aspects of public opinion in Luxembourg and provide insights into the country’s economic situation, quality of life, major concerns, expected participation in the upcoming EU elections, perceptions of the EU and level of trust in national governments.
Nearly eight in 10 people in Luxembourg trust national government
The survey found that 77% of respondents in Luxembourg tended to trust the European Union, 19 percentage points higher than the EU average (58%).
Similarly, 77% of Luxembourg respondents said they tended to trust the national government. This is 36 percentage points higher than the EU average (41%) and among the highest in the EU. The highest level of trust was seen in Åland in Finland, where 85% of respondents said they tended to trust the national government.
Furthermore, 64% of respondents in Luxembourg indicated their intention to participate in the upcoming European elections in June 2024, surpassing the 57% of respondents across the EU who expressed the same intention.
Satisfaction with the economy and quality of life
Luxembourg respondents expressed overall satisfaction with the direction of their country. The majority (89%) said they believed that the situation of the economy in Luxembourg was good. More than four in 10 (43%) of people in Luxembourg said they saw the country’s economy as “very good,” a stark contrast compared to the mere 10% of respondents across the EU who shared this sentiment.
Additionally, an overwhelming 95% in Luxembourg said their quality of life was “very good” or “rather good,” compared to 82% for the EU average.
Major concerns: cost of living and housing
When asked about the two most pressing matters in Luxembourg, 30% of respondents in the country cited the cost of living as their primary concern, slightly lower than the 31% of EU-wide respondents.
Following closely was the issue of housing. Over one-quarter (28%) of people in Luxembourg highlighted it as a major concern, slightly higher than the EU average (26%).
Similarly, health concerns were equally significant, with 26% of respondents across the EU saying this was one of the main issues facing their region.
The fieldwork for the public opinion in the EU regions survey, requested by the European Commission and carried out by Ipsos European Public Affairs, was conducted in Luxembourg between 15 January and 27 January 2024, and consisted of 503 face-to-face interviews in the grand duchy. In the EU, more than 62,000 people were interviewed between 11 January and 15 February 2024, with the results published in March.
