Phone users increasingly rely on data-based communication apps than on traditional text messages to send out their end-of-year wishes, but Post Luxembourg noted a return of the latter, at least to ring in the new year.

Between 2018 and 2023, data exchange has grown exponentially on the Post Luxembourg network. In six years, the amount of data exchanged on the last day of the year has more than tripled, going from 50.2 terabytes to 168 terabytes.

The use of apps remains stable compared to 2022, where 165Tb were used. However, compared to the return of text messages, the 1.8% increase remains humble.

Indeed, 72% more SMS were sent for the 2023 new year than in 2022 over the Post Luxembourg network, adding up to 653,234 texts.

The trend has however not been confirmed by Proximus’ Tango, who told RTL they witnessed an opposite trend this year.

Orange Luxembourg told Delano that while it has seen a 12% decrease in texts, it saw a 52% increase in data-- “because our offers feature a lot of data”--and a 17% increase in phone calls. “This shows that our clients still need proximity after covid,” a spokesperson said.
