Looks like Christmas is ahead of schedule this year! This holiday season, the Philharmonie has prepared several «presents» for you to enjoy before the big day; experiences that will open you up to a world of new melodies. Discover this selection of highlights and unwrap unforgettable musical moments this month at the Philharmonie!

05.12. Angélique Kidjo & Yo-Yo Ma: «Sarabande Africaine»

Angélique Kidjo and Yo-Yo Ma are two musical personalities who could not be more different in their culture and musical «home territories». Both of them, however, routinely cross genre boundaries in their musical practice. Together, they have developed a programme which takes the baroque dance of the «saraband» as its point of departure, using it as a vehicle to travel through time and space. The Iberian and Arabic roots of the saraband will play a role here, as will the fact that the animist religions of the Congo revere a spirit by the name of «Zarabanda».

07.12. Concert de Gala de SOS Villages d’Enfants Monde

For the 6th consecutive year, the Philharmonie is proud to host SOS Villages d’Enfants’ annual Gala Concert on 07.12., in the presence of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Henri. On stage, the Luxembourg Philharmonic will join forces with young conductor Tarmo Peltokoski and the award-winning baritone Taehan Kim to present a rich bouquet of romantic gems by Anton Bruckner and Richard Strauss. What better way to accompany an evening of generosity and sharing? All proceeds from sales will support SOS Villages d’Enfants’ various missions in Uzbekistan.

10.12. «Grigory Sokolov plays Bach and Mozart»

Over the decades, there has hardly been a pianist on whom the press has bestowed more superlatives than him, presumably for the very reason that Grigory Sokolov refuses to make a big deal of his performances. Instead, he lets his virtuosity – which is doubtlessly outstanding – fade into the background while he invites the audience to partake of his profound interpretations of the piano literature currently occupying him: Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will thus be in the spotlight on 10.12. at the Grand Auditorium. The two composers are closely connected, as will be demonstrated by Geneviève Geffray in a French-language conference at 18:45 at the Espace Découverte. An exciting baroque-world music crossover, a charity fundraiser topped by a Romantic extravaganza, or an intimate encounter between two of classical music history’s greatest composers: take your pick this Advent season at the Philharmonie!
