Rumours have been flying for a few days: Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey has himself confirmed (on Twitter) that he is leaving the company.

"After almost sixteen years of having a role in the company, from co-founder to CEO to chairman to interim CEO to CEO, I have finally decided to step down."

With these words, Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square, put an end to the rumours that had been circulating for several days.

He will be replaced by Parag Agrawal as CEO and Bret Taylor as chairman of the board.

Jack Dorsey will complete his tenure in May, accompanying the two men in their new roles, without explaining the reasons for his departure.

"I am tweeting this email. My vow is to make Twitter the most transparent company in the world."
