For the fifth week in a row, covid infections have been on the rise in Luxembourg, increasing by 28%.

Between 27 June and 3 July, 5,741 new infections were registered in the grand duchy. This brings the number of active cases up to 10,488, compared to 8,834 the week before. Those infected were on average almost 40 years old.

The number of hospitalisations has also increased. With an average of 53 years, 19 patients were brought into normal care--they were 13 the week before. One person is in the intensive care unit too.

Though parliament last week scrapped most of the remaining covid measures due to a stark decrease in infections during spring, two covid patients passed away last week. This brings the number of deaths linked to the virus in the grand duchy up to 1,095 according to the latest report.

The national health directorate . Its director, Jean-Claude Schmit on 4 July stated that though a lockdown was unlikely, sanitary restrictions could come back in time for autumn, when infections are expected to increase again.

The ministry of health meanwhile has relaunched its mobile vaccination campaign, the so-called “Impfbus”, to bring the number of vaccinated people up. Currently, the vaccination rate stagnates at 78.8% for those who are eligible for a shot. Over70s were also invited to get a fourth shot as their immunity to the virus tends to be lower.

The government, which had been working on a vaccine mandate for over50s and healthcare staff, has also slightly following an evaluation by an expert group. Though it sticks by its mandate for older residents, it gave up calls to have healthcare staff vaccinated.
