Corsage represents Austria, but is a Luxembourg co-production with samsa film and as well as Krieps includes other Luxembourgers in the credits such as Carlo Thoss for sound and Paul Biwer for special effects. Earlier in December Krieps was named Best Actress at the European Film Awards.

The shortlists, unveiled on Tuesday in the US, will be whittled down to a final five for the official nominations, which will be announced on 24 January. The 95th Oscars are scheduled for 12 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Corsage is up against the likes of All Quiet on the Western Front for Germany, Saint Omer for France and Close for Belgium.

Also on the shortlist is Cyrus Neshvad’s The Red Suitcase in the Live Action Short Film category.
