Animated feature films “Where is Anne Frank” and “Wolfwalkers”--both co-produced by Luxembourg--on Tuesday were nominated for a European Film Award.

The awards are presented by the European Film Academy and recognise achievements in European cinema in more than two dozen categories. More than 4,100 academy members will vote for the winners.

Among the films vying for a trophy is animated feature “Where is Anne Frank”, co-produced by Samsa Film.

Written and directed by Ari Folman, the film follows the journey of Kitty--Anne’s imaginary friend in her famous diary--who comes to life in the present day in the family’s Prinsengracht house in Amsterdam. Believing that Anne is still alive, Kitty begins her search for her friend.

The film celebrated its world premiere at the this year. Large parts of the animation work were done in Luxembourg by Doghouse Films, combining traditional 2D animation and stop-motion. Luxembourg-based sound engineer Michel Schillings also worked on the film.

“Wolfwalkers”, co-produced by Mélusine Productions together with Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, was previously nominated for Golden Globe and a , although it lost in both ceremonies.

The film is based on Irish folklore and tells the story of Robyn whose father has been ordered to exterminate a pack of wolves living near the town of Kilkenny. There, Robyn meets Mebh, a member of the mysterious wolfwalker tribe, and she is drawn deeper into an enchanted world her father is set on destroying.

In addition, Romania’s Radu Jude is up for a best director and best screenwriter gong for his film “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn”, which was co-produced by Luxembourg’s Paul Thiltges Distributions and previously won the at the Berlin film festival.

The award ceremony is scheduled for 11 December.
