The public prosecutor’s office has requested a two-year prison sentence, possibly suspended, for the author of death threats against Xavier Bettel and Paulette Lenert.

The bus driver who sent death threats to prime minister Bettel (DP) and health minister Lenert (LSAP) during the pandemic is facing two years in prison and a fine. This is what the public prosecutor requested during a court date on Wednesday, while mentioning the possibility of a suspended sentence.

During the pandemic, the perpetrator sent several letters to the two ministers, but also national health insurer CNS and the health directorate. These letters contained aggressive and threatening passages against the physical integrity of Bettel, Lenert and relatives of theirs.

After an extensive investigation, the police managed to identify the author of the letters by tracing them to a fake Facebook profile commenting on articles on the subject. Similarities in spelling and grammar led the investigators to search Facebook for the telephone number of the individual in question.

At the hearing, the accused admitted writing the threatening letters. The suspect has a clean record and has already served three months in custody. In court, he said that he was driven by frustration over health restrictions. He also spoke of a “moment of weakness”.

The court will deliver its judgment on 16 June.
