LUkraine, a Luxembourg-based not-for-profit will organise a demonstration on Saturday to voice its opposition to the military offensive launched in Ukraine by Russian president Vladimir Putin and to call on Luxembourg’s government for assistance.

President of the association Nicolas Zharov has penned an open letter to the Luxembourg government and he will present the LUkraine demands at 16:00 on Friday 25 February.

The organisers expect 300 people to show up at the demonstration on Saturday which will take place in front of the ministry of state at 10:00. But the number of protesters can grow as showed the capacity of the Ukrainian community in Luxembourg to rally at a short notice as well as the support from other Luxembourg residents.

“Every Ukrainian is taking part now in the organisation in one way or another,” said Zharov speaking to Delano.

In a previous open letter addressing prime minister Xavier Bettel (DP), LUkraine called for all Russian diplomats to be expelled from Luxembourg, for Russian funds in Luxembourg accounts to be blocked, for intra-governmental business between Russia and Luxembourg to stop as well as to support the exclusion of Russian banks from the Swift banking system.

The removal of Russian banks from Swift, a global messaging system for financial transactions that connects, will remain the main focus of the demands of LUkraine which will be voiced later on Friday.

However, Zharov was also concerned about the war refugees fleeing from Ukraine and how they would be accommodated.

“We are getting a lot of people trying to flee the war. So, the war refugees, we will ask Luxembourgish authorities to accommodate them. Together with our association, we are ready to take action and at organise special actions to host some of the refugees,” he said.
