While Europe celebrates Armistice Day on 11 November, the US commemorates its veterans during Veterans Day. This year, the war in Ukraine brings more salience to the event, held at the Luxembourg American Cemetery.

Luxembourg defence minister  (Déi Gréng) attended the event alongside US Commander of the 52nd Fighter Wing  Colonel Hauck.

“Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has been a reminder of how fragile peace can be, even on the twenty-first century, even on European soil,” said US ambassador to Luxembourg at the event. “On Veterans Day, we are reminded that the peace we enjoy comes at a price and we are humbled by the sacrifices members of the armed forces make in the name of our freedom.”

Veterans Day is a US federal holiday remembering and honouring military veterans of the US army who have fought during and since World War I. It coincides with Remembrance Day.
