The popular Vianden pool in the north of the grand duchy will remain closed for another two years, due to much needed maintenance.

Closed since September of 2019, the swimming pool will take some time to make a comeback. After a child nearly drowned during the pool’s last season, the floods last July and two years of sanitary restrictions, the pool is in a dire state, Claude Tonino, the mayor of Vianden, told RTL.

Tonino explains that a check-up of the pool’s finances had shown that not enough cash had been invested in the maintenance of the infrastructures of the pool. For 2024, the mayor promises a new pool with a new slide and more sports infrastructures around the site. This would cost €14m-€15m, which the commune is trying to raise from different ministries.

Until then, fans of open-air swimming pools and those wishing to remain refreshed during the heat wave will be able to visit one of the country’s many outdoor pools—in Troisvierges, Dudelange and Remich among others--and lakes.
