The Luxembourg actress's portrayal of empress Elisabeth of Austria in the film Corsage continues to create a sensation. After winning an award at the Cannes Film Festival, Vicky Krieps has now been nominated for a European Film Award.

Less well known to the general public than the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Bafta or even the Césars, the European Film Awards reward the best of European cinema each year. After two editions organised in virtual mode due to covid-19, this year's edition--the 35th--will be held in a month's time (on 10 December) in Reykjavik, Iceland.

While three Luxembourg co-productions were part of the pre-selection unveiled by the European Film Academy last summer--Corsage (Samsa Film) by Austrian Marie Kreutzer, Plus que jamais (Samsa Film) by French-German Emily Atef and As far as I can walk (Les Films Fauves) by Serbian Stefan Arsenijevic--only Corsage found a place in the nominations announced on Tuesday 8 November.

But the film co-produced by (Samsa Film) has been nominated for three categories: best film, best director (for Marie Kreutzer) and best actress for Vicky Krieps.

It is not really a surprise to find the Luxembourg actress nominated as well, as her performance as “Sissi” has impressed many people since the presentation of the film at the last and the best actress award she received in the category "Un certain regard".

The other nominees for best actress at the European Film Awards are Léa Seydoux (Un beau matin by Mia Hansen-Løve), Penélope Cruz (Madres paralelas by Pedro Almodóvar), Zar Amir Ebrahimi (Holy Spider by Ali Abbasi) and Meltem Kaptan (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush by Andreas Dresen).

Finally, on the Luxembourg side, it is to be noted that The Pamfir Oath, by Ukrainian director Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk, which was present at the last Cannes Festival and co-produced by Luxembourg’s (Wady Media), is also nominated in the category European Discovery-FIPRESCI Award.
