Déi Lénk MP Nathalie Oberweis argues that the war in Ukraine cannot be won just by providing the country with military material.

During an interview with the 100,7 radio, during which Nathalie Oberweis discussed her party’s collaboration with the labour union OGBL on the topic of index manipulation, the déi Lénk deputy also expressed her thoughts on the Russian attack on Ukraine, a major contributor to soaring energy prices and inflation.

Asked whether she saw a solution to the war in Ukraine, Oberweis stated: “I don’t see how we’d stop the war from here. Of course, I think we all want peace in Ukraine. There’s that common denominator in the room, this war of course must come to an end. Everyone agrees on this, except maybe Putin and his government. We condemn this war as a war against human rights but we, déi Lénk, think that this war cannot be won on a military level.”

Delivering weapons is not enough on the middle and long term, said Oberweis. “It sounds good on the short term, but what is the strategy” to exit the war, she also asked. Oberweis explained that for déi Lénk, “this is a war that will drag on, that risks to become extremely long and to escalate because the opponent--in this case Russia--is extremely strong and autonomous.” Though she added that EU “sanctions work in part, the Russian regime turned to other big and strong emerging markets,” which limits the impact of the sanctions in place.

For Oberweis, an immediate solution would be to call a truce and find a compromise with which “both parties could live”. That would mean, for example, Russia withdrawing its military to “the border as it prior to 24 February” and giving Russia a promise that Ukraine would not become a member of Nato.
