Return of the Christmas markets. The Greater Region’s Christmas markets are making their long-awaited return. The Christmas market will be open from 22 November to 1 January. In Luxembourg, around a hundred chalets will be scattered . On the menu: a giant Christmas tree, Ferris wheel, ice rink, musical programmes, illuminations and a plethora of creative activities for children. Rainy Days 2024. The Philharmonie Luxembourg presents the Rainy Days festival, this year exploring the theme of ‘extremes’ under the artistic direction of Luxembourg composer Catherine Kontz. The programme offers a bold fusion of modern classics, such as John Cage and Morton Feldman, and contemporary creations. Performances will range from large-scale orchestral works to minimalist pieces, featuring atypical formations such as 17 electric guitars and a solo harp. Renowned artists, including the Arditti Quartet, will share the stage with young talent from children's composition workshops, offering a rich and diverse musical experience.

Norma Jeane Baker de Troie. The play Norma Jeane Baker de Troie, written by Anne Carson, explores the parallels between Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe, two legendary female figures. Through this modern tragedy, the playwright reflects on the image and perception of women in society, whether they are ancient icons or Hollywood stars.

60 years of Muselkanalisierung. This retrospective exhibition on the history of the Moselle canal, to mark its 60th anniversary, takes a deep dive into the local archives, with testimonies and historical photographs. Jean-Marie Backes, author of Alltag im Rückspiegel, will be reading extracts from his book on the inauguration of the canal.

Friday 22 November
The Waste Orchestra by Rubbish Music. As part of Rainy Days 2024 (20-24 November), this unique event explores extreme and experimental art through music and performance. Created by Luxembourg composer Catherine Kontz, this second edition of the festival invites visitors to rethink the limits of music, presenting works ranging from John Cage to a piano concerto without a pianist by Liam Dougherty. Rubbish Music artists Kate Carr and Iain Chambers will be inviting the public to take part in an interactive symphony made from recycled rubbish.

Luxembourg Pavilion at the Venice Biennale | Vinyl launch. The Luxembourg Pavilion is celebrating the end of the 60th Venice Biennale with the launch of a vinyl capturing the sound interventions of the last six months. This collaborative project between artist Andrea Mancini and the Every Island collective is an opportunity to rediscover experimental sound performances, including those by guest artists Selin Davasse and Célin Jiang. This vinyl, marking an auditory exploration of the pavilion space, will be presented during a listening session.

Dream Catcher / The Big Gang Theory - Orchestra. To mark the 30th anniversary of Diddeleng hëlleft, Dream Catcher and the HMD Big Band will be revisiting 25 years of their musical repertoire with a captivating new version of their iconic songs. This special concert is a musical journey in which the 24 musicians reinterpret iconic songs, accompanied by the spellbinding vocals of Joëlle Gelhausen and Eric Falchero, creating a unique musical experience.

Léa Tirabasso - In the Bushes. Winner of the Lëtzebuerger Danzpräis 2023, Léa Tirabasso presents her creation ‘In the Bushes,’ a work exploring the human condition through intense, visceral dance. Based on Henry Gee’s theories of evolution, the performance questions social stereotypes and reveals the vulnerability of the human being, accompanied by a new electronic composition by Johanna Bramli and Ed Chivers.

Heavy Metal - Harmonie municipale Esch/Alzette. In this offbeat edition of the Harmonie municipale concert, the tuba, a massive and surprisingly melodious instrument, is given pride of place with a performance in which the instrument takes on a rock air, defying the conventions of traditional metal. In partnership with the Luxembourg Tuba Consortium, this evening offers a musical exploration of metal in a surprising and refreshing form.

The exhibition highlights a period when the computer left the laboratory and entered the home, coinciding with the second wave of feminism.

Anniversary of the liberation of Metz. This commemorative day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Metz with a rich programme of events. It begins at 2pm with an official ceremony at the Bellecroix American Eagle, followed at 3pm by a tribute on the Place d’Armes - Jacques François Blondel. At 4.30pm, the Maison régionale de la mémoire du souvenir français will be inaugurated on the Place de France, before a torchlight procession at 6pm, starting at three emblematic sites and accompanied by the Metz en guerre association. The evening will close at 6.30pm with a jazz concert by the City Jazz Big Band on the Place d’Armes.

“Ariodante” opera. Immerse yourself in Georg Friedrich Handel’s lyrical drama, first performed in London in 1735. The story explores the passions and manipulations within the court of the king of Scotland, where Princess Ginevra and her fiancé Ariodante find their love threatened by the machinations of Duke Polinesso. Jetske Mijnssen’s staging offers an intense psychological vision of this baroque huis clos, directed by Christopher Moulds. The second edition of Grrrabuge returns to LaVallée with over 50 exhibitors from all over Europe presenting wines, ciders, beers and other natural fermented beverages.
