With the inaugural football match scheduled at the new stadium for Wednesday 1st September, what is the future of the Josy Barthel stadium on the route d'Arlon?

The celebration of the first football match in the new Stade de Luxembourg marks the closure of the Stade Josy Barthel for international competitions. This is only the first step in a long process that began several years ago and will lead to a vast and ambitious urban reconversion.

In fact, in addition to the land occupied by Josy Barthel Stadium (which includes a football pitch, a sports hall and tennis courts), the City of Luxembourg is planning to redevelop the entire district, including the lot currently occupied by the fire brigade (the CGDIS services are moving to the Cloche d'Or) and the Recycling Centre, which will benefit from a brand new infrastructure in Merl in the coming years. In addition, there is a large plot of land owned by the Franciscan Sisters of Mercy. All in all, the approximately 10 hectares will be converted into a new mixed neighbourhood, the "Wunnquartier Stade”, which will benefit from the proximity of the city centre.

An urban planning competition is currently in its final stages, with five teams still competing, before a jury selects a winner in a final deliberation, which should take place towards the end of October.
