Valérie Quilez--international coordinator of Kultur:LX, Luxembourg’s arts council--presents some of her picks where to see artists from the grand duchy abroad in 2022.

Quilez, together with co-coordinator Diane Tobes--took up her post in February this year. She previously led Luxembourg’s cultural representation in France.

“I would first like to point out that, before going beyond our borders, we are lucky enough to be able to discover, this winter, the talent of our Luxembourg artists in the country's cultural institutions: the Freigeister exhibition at Mudam, Catherine Lorent and Nora Wagner in Dudelange, Karolina Markiewicz and Pascal Piron at Casino Luxembourg, or the opening exhibitions at the Konschthal in Esch. These are artists whose work is of high quality, so let's not miss out on this pleasure,” she said.

“Otherwise, not too far from Luxembourg, the BPS22 in Charleroi hosts the monographic exhibition of Brognon Rollin until 9 January. This is a tour of the museum exhibition presented at the Mac Val in France last year, which offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in 15 years of creation and to get a complete overview of their universe,” she said.

Another tip: “Later in the year, in July, Les Rencontres d'Arles will present a monographic exhibition of Romain Urhausen. This exhibition, which was planned during his lifetime (the photographer died in 2021, editor's note), will enable us to place his work in a European historical context, in relation to German subjective photography and French humanist photography.”

Also on the agenda is the Luxembourg pavilion at the , with the exhibition by Tina Gillen, an opportunity to see the work of this important artist from the Luxembourg scene, who has a garnered a good international reputation.

“A little further away, Serge Ecker has been commissioned to create a piece in the public space in Kaunas, Lithuania. This commission is also in line with the dynamics of the European Capital of Culture, since Kaunas shares this great initiative with Esch-sur-Alzette”, Quilez said.

“And all this without forgetting the works of Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil in the public space in Nantes, or the metro in Toulouse, the interventions of Marco Godinho in Marseille and many other exhibitions to come in 2023.”
