Around 80 women playing for eight teams will compete in the inaugural Luxembourg women’s cricket tournament on 21 and 22 August.

Most the players are new to the game, but the sport has seen a surge of interest recently.

“This tournament is another step forward for the women’s game in Luxembourg. Domestic cricket and international club activity is growing, with the ultimate goal of fielding a Luxembourg national women’s team for the first time,” said Steve Evans, chair of the Luxembourg Cricket Federation in a press release.

The tournament is designed to help meet demand but also generate more interest in the sport.

“Women’s cricket is growing globally, and we are proud to help this progression in Luxembourg by organising this tournament with the help of the Walferdange commune,” said Joost Mees, chair of the Optimists Cricket Club.

The tournament is being organised at the club’s ground in Walferdange, located near Rue de l’Alzette. The is hosted under CovidCheck guidelines and players and guests must carry a valid immunity or test certificate.

Music and food round off the two-day event and the Luxembourg Cricket Federation plans to host more games and training after the tournament to sustain the momentum of women joining the sport.
