Luxembourg’s British Ladies Club (BLC) in recognition of International Women’s Day earlier in March organised a donations drive for Dress For Success, a charity that helps women return to the workplace.

Dress For Success collects professional attire for women who might otherwise be unable to afford new clothes as well as providing support and information sessions on the Luxembourg job market, preparing for interviews and more.

Jill Griffin, president of Dress For Success, said that the organisation is clothes rich but cash poor. Job centre Adem helps the organisation find facilities for its programmes. “Adem recognised our success at getting women into work. While they couldn’t support us financially, they were able to provide a dressing room,” Griffin said. “They also provide rooms for both training and 1-2-1 consultations.”

At an event on 24 March, the British Ladies Club delivered items collected from its members. The BLC’s Victoria Hodgson, Armelle Diallo Martins and Wendy Casey were joined by Eileen Cotter-Larson who presented make-up collected from BlackRock staff.

Items that are donated but not suitable workwear, such as floral summer dresses or evening wear, are sold to raise money to purchase staples that are needed, such as tights or plain tops.

“Statistically, the most successful interview colour is navy blue,” said Griffin, “as it projects loyalty and confidence.”

Dress For Success relies on the support of more than 100 volunteers, including mentors from different backgrounds who teach essential topics, such as CV and cover letter writing, dress code, body language and interview techniques. Programmes are run in English, French and German.
