Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (DP) and health minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP) will hold a press conference this Monday 29 November at 5pm after a government council meeting, with new measures expected to be introduced.

The press conference can be followed live, in Luxembourgish and French on the website of Delano's sister publication Paperjam. It will follow an extraordinary and urgently decided government council since the previous meeting of ministers took place on Friday.

The government wanted to have more information at its disposal regarding the health situation and to have a more precise view on its possible evolution over the coming weeks. But also to be able to discuss with social partners the possible measures and their impact.

There is no doubt that new measures or a tightening of those already in place will be on the agenda. While last Friday the decision was taken to increase the number of days of remote work from 3 to 4 in the public sector, that should also be introduced in the private sector. It remains to be seen how much, and whether this will be in a “recommended” or “compulsory” form. Group meetings could also be affected, with fewer people in the same place at the same time, both indoors and outdoors. Christmas markets will then be directly affected. Also, as was the case in Belgium, the hotel and catering sector could again be called upon to adapt, as could nightclubs.

The ambition of the government, led by experts, will be to do everything possible to slow down the rapid deterioration of the health situation, a few weeks before the end-of-year celebrations. This is a crucial period in economic terms for several sectors.
