Nominated on Friday evening by the DP as the national spëtzekandidat (lead candidate) for the legislative elections on 8 October, Xavier Bettel electrified the 400 party members gathered on Saturday morning at the Syrkus cultural centre in Roodt-sur-Syr.

Three days after the made him once again the ideal prime minister for Luxembourgers surveyed by Ilres, officially became the spëtzekandidat (lead candidate) of the Demokratesch Partei the evening of Friday 7 July, the party announced in a press release. 32% of those surveyed in the poll saw him as prime minister again next autumn, ahead of , head of the CSV list, and , who was on Sunday 9 July.

The press release also announced the two heads of list for the four constituencies: Xavier Bettel and finance minister in the centre, the minister for national education, children and youth, higher education and research and the new minister for family, integration and the greater region for the south, the president of the chamber of deputies, and the minister for the civil service and relations with parliament and minister delegate for digitalisation and administrative reform, for the north, the minister for the self-employed and for tourism and MP and secretary general of the DP for the west.

The candidates will be officially presented on Saturday 15 July at the Atelier in Luxembourg.

Quality of life and purchasing power

In the wake of the decision, over 400 members gathered at the Syrkus cultural centre in Roodt-sur-Syr on Saturday morning to support their candidates.

Under the slogan “No bei dir,” or “close to you,” the DP intends to defend quality of life and purchasing power in order to relieve the middle class.

“There comes a time when it’s really important to make the right decisions,” said Bettel.

“The DP is the party of the future,” continued party chairman Delles, pointing to the good results achieved by DP candidates in the local elections. “I want to ensure that there is a level of growth, to improve the quality of people for the next generations so that we can free up creative room for manoeuvre.”
