While unemployment has been on the rise since May 2022, the number of job seekers in Luxembourg registered with the national employment agency in September 2022 has decreased compared to September 2021.

14,333 people in the grand duchy were signed up with the Adem agency at the end of September. The number has slightly increased compared to August 2022, where 12,153 were inactive on the job market, data Adem calls “stable”.

Compared to twelve months prior, however, the grand duchy counts 1,508 fewer job seekers, a 9.6% year-on-year decrease. But, “the number of new registrations is on the rise again, the national employment agency notes in a statement released on 20 October. This 5.6% increase in registrations is largely due to more refugees of Ukrainian origin, who may work in Luxembourg thanks to a temporary protection status, enrolling.

The post-covid rebound and subsequent surge in job openings advertised on the grand duchy’s job market has suffered from the war in Ukraine and energy crisis too. Employers in September 2022 advertised 3,633 new openings, 15.5% less than last year. There are still 13,332 employment offers on Adem’s platform regardless of this downward trend. IT, accounting and kitchen staff figure among the most sought out profiles.
