Following thirty hours of brainstorming, coding and pitching, the winners of 3rd edition of the public sector blockchain hackathon around public energy efficiency organised by Infrachain have been revealed.

ZeroKnowledge, a team made up of experts from the University of Luxembourg’s SnT, the University of Bayreuth and Fraunhofer FIT, won the challenge with its “Gamification for Reduced Energy Consumption” project. Some of the team members had already participated in the challenge and won under the name

The winning project is a secure infrastructure for privacy, preserving use of energy consumption data. Users--be they individuals or organisations--can compete for the lowest electricity consumption and earn rewards for winning in an open ecosystem.

“We enjoyed the hackathon a lot. It was a great facility again; we were already here last year. We enjoyed the opportunity to try out new technologies in the context of blockchain,” ZeroKnowledge stated following their success.

Filedgr, with a national public energy saving certificate, was awarded the second prize, while EY won third place with a project allowing public administrations to meet in a marketplace and execute secured energy projects that can be trailed by audits. The latter announced that they would donate their €2,000 cash prize to Luxembourg association Caritas.

Though ZeroKnowledge won the challenge, could potentially be explored by the digitalisation ministry--the main sponsor of the event--further down the line.
