The Philharmonie hosts an evening of Russian music performed by the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre.
St. Petersburg’s Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre is a regular guest at the Philharmonie and returns with acclaimed conductor Valery Gergiev (photo Alberto Venzago) for a programme featuring works by three of Russia’s most famous composers.
The evening kicks off with Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto in D (“Basle”) for string orchestram which the composer to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Basel Chamber Orchestra.
The centre-piece of the programme is Dmitri Shostakovich’s concerto for piano, trumpet and strings with Vadym Kholodenko on piano and Selina Ott on trumpet. Then, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s serenade for strings rounds off the evening.
