Although Dmitri Shostakovich’s eight symphony is the highlight of the evening, the OPL will also be joined by violinist Baiba Skride for a performance of Sergeï Prokofiev’s 2nd concerto for violin and orchestra.

The Shostakovich piece was completed in 1943 and despite some criticism--the aforementioned Prokofiev decried its length and melodic quality--the composer described his own work as a “triumph of beauty”.
