Luxembourg’s first ever sustainable, self-sufficient construction project is taking shape in Redange and you can pay it a visit before it’s finished.
The Äerdschëff is being built following principles commonly used in the Earthships (photo of one in Phoenix by Kyle Greenberg/Flickr) which were pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds. They are designed deliberately to be uncomplicated structures so that people with limited building knowledge can build them.
The Centre for Ecological Learning Luxembourg (Cell) developed the idea with public funding to build its own, which will house two Cell volunteers and an ecological learning centre.
They obtained a plot of land behind the Atert High School in Redange where, since 29 July, volunteers have been building the structure using repurposed and sustainable materials, including old tyres filled with rammed earth and a special type of clay.
In addition to the volunteers, a four-strong team of Earthship experts is project managing the site.
On the afternoon of 15 August, members of the public can visit the site to find out more. The site will be open to the public until 4:30pm.
The project continues into the summer. Anyone interested in volunteering should reach out to Cell to find out more.
