The gorgeous people at Rotondes have been spoiling our readers rotten with tickets recently. The latest batch we have is to see Wives.
New York quartet Wives (photo Rachel Cabitt) come from a long line of great bands that hail from the city. Tracks from their debut album “So Removed” have been likened to The Velvet Underground (on ’20 Teens’) , Sonic Youth (on ‘Workin’’ and The Ramones (on ‘Whatevr’). But other tracks have been likened to fellow east coast band Pixies and even to The Rolling Stones.
Mining such rich influence makes for a band that is immediately accessible and a sound that is comfortingly familiar. But the four musicians pack a punch and prove they are not mere copycats. And in ‘Waving Past Nirvana’ they have the sort of languid cool that can only stem from a band deeply embedded in the Big Apple scene.
