Be prepared to enter seventies Britain with Donna Summer’s music top of the hit parade and adults behaving disgracefully in Mike Leigh’s hilarious masterpiece of situation comedy, "Abigail’s Party".
Leigh insists that it was never his intention to write a reflection of the “state of the nation”, but rather the play came from an intuitive sense of the spirit of the times, and from a growing personal fear of, and frustration with, the suburban existence.
Beverly and husband Laurence are entertaining their newly wed neighbours. Joining them is twitchy divorcee Sue, banished from the party of her teenage daughter. Over a stack of cheesy-pineapple sticks, small talk and splashes of alcohol, the appalling host’s soiree soon descends into chaos. As the sniping begins, this delicious comedy cracks open social climbing suburbia to savagely funny effect.
Director Douglas Rintoul’s outstanding productions, "Design for Living", "Closer", "Invisible", "As You Like It" and his 2017 production, "The Crucible" have in the past enthralled Luxembourg audiences.
For this original but faithful look at an iconic classic he's collaborating with the brilliant production designer Lee Newby, fresh from his West End hit, Labour of Love. Abigail’s Party is a co-production with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, Derby Theatre, Wiltshire Creative and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg.
