This 21st Century opera by Atelier Bildraum, Frederik Neyrinck & Sabryna Pierre, takes audiences on a visual journey on beauty, transience and death.
Icon transfers the 19th Centrury story of the death mask of “L’inconnue de la Seine”, an unidentified woman who reportedly drowned in the Seine and whose death mask became a popular piece of art in fashionable French homes. The woman, whose body was pulled from the Seine in the 1870s or 1880s, was immortalized in a death mask made from a plaster casting of her face by a pathologist who was apparently enchanted by her face. A hybrid mix of photoshoot, film set and concert, this opera sheds light on how we relate to portraits of people in the 21 st Century.
A first iteration of the work in progress was shown at the Théâtres de la Ville during Talent LAB*17. Icon is performed in English with surtitles in English and French.
