Great news for the bargain hunters! The winter sales are back in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. But where and when to go? Do start the winter sales at the same time in Belgium, France, Germany and the Grand Duchy? And what to do if the products you have purchased shows a lack of conformity?
Doing the sales when you live in the Grand Duchy gives you the opportunity to travel around the neighbouring countries and track down good deals through the whole Greater Region. But for this, you need to know the dates of the sales in each country because they don’t start at the same time. The sales periods are set by the law and differ from country to country.
In Luxembourg, the winter sales have started since the end of December the 29th and will end on Saturday the 27th of January 2019. According to the Grand-ducal regulation, the winter sales – as well as the summer sales – cannot exceed one month. In France, this period lasts six weeks and starts later: from Wednesday the 9th of January 2019 until Tuesday the 19th of February 2019. The Grand Est region, and Lorraine in particular, can begin one week earlier because of the proximity of Luxembourg. In Belgium, the intensive shopping period has started on the 3rd of January and will continue until Thursday the 31st of January. In Germany, the winter sales have been not regulated since 2004 but the majority of the shops are usually selling their products at reduced prices under the label of “sales” at the end of January until mid-February.
Where to go?
During the sales period, you can enjoy exceptional conditions everywhere in the Greater Region, in large shopping centres as well as in local stores. More than 3000 brands are waiting for you in Luxembourg City. The shops will attract up to 70% off on the winter collection. The bus lines are free on Saturdays and you can take advantage of the new car park located in the Royal Hamilius complex.
In Belgium, they are two shopping centres just over the border: Outlet MacArthurGlen in Messancy and Espace Shopping Hydrion in Arlon. In Germany, the most important shopping destinations close to Luxembourg are Trier and Sarrebruck. And if you have time, you can go to the Outletcity of Metzingen located near Stuttgart (270 km from Luxembourg). In France, you have the choice between the city of Metz - and its Muse commercial centre in particular -, the Waves Actisud shopping centre in Moulins-lès-Metz, the Outlet Marques Avenue in Talange on the motorway to Metz and the commercial areas in and around Thionville.
What to do if there is a lack of conformity?
In accordance with the directive 1999/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 1999, each product sold to a consumer is covered by a guarantee of conformity for 2 years, whether the product was on sale or not. If the product you have purchased shows a defect at the time of purchase, the seller must, depending on the case, either refund you, grant you a discount or either repair or exchange the product. However, if you knowingly purchase an article showing a defect, the seller cannot be held liable for the defect. In this case, the defect must be mentioned in writing and countersigned by you.
And if there is no defect in the product? If the product shows no defect or other lack of conformity, the seller does not have to take back or exchange the product, whether the product was on sale or not. He can freely choose to offer you an exchange or refund you within a set deadline as commercial gesture of goodwill. Or he can simply refuse to take back or exchange any product sold at sale price.
So, even if you have a very short time to decide, think twice before buying a product on sale. It’s better to lose a deal than make a bad deal. And don’t forget that if you didn’t find anything during the winter sales, you have another chance during the summer sales. In the Grand Duchy, they will take place from Friday the 28th of June 2019 until Saturday the 27th of July 2019.
