Latvian Ineta Ziemele, 50, replaces Egils Levits CJEU

Appointed on 2 September by the Council, two new judges joined the prestigious body of magistrates charged with interpreting EU law.

Latvian Ineta Ziemele, 50, replaces Egils Levits, who left to preside over the country in July 2019. Ziemelestudied in her home country, as well as in Denmark, Sweden and the UK. She served on the European Court of Human Rights between 2005 and 2014, then on the Constitutional Court of Latvia, which she chaired for three years before taking up her post in Luxembourg.

Czech national Jan Passer, 46, succeeds Jiri Malenovsky. A graduate of the Universities of Prague and Stockholm, he served in various courts, including the Supreme Administrative Court of the Czech Republic, before joining the EU General Court in 2016.

Their terms run until October 2024, when they can be renewed or replaced as their government wishes.

Each judge is interviewed by committee 205, set up in 2010, which checks the skills of judges and lawyers appointed to join the CJEU.
